#227: Lessons and Carols (Part 1 of 2) (with Jennifer Runge)

Ministry Monday is happy to offer a 2-part series on Lessons and Carols! Our first part of the series features Jennifer Runge, NPM member and Director of Sacred Music at Parish of the Holy Eucharist (Diocese of Portland, Maine). On this episode, Jennifer shares her best practices and suggestions on how to offer Lessons and Carols, both musically and considering the needs of a merged/clustered parish.

SHOW NOTES

Bio: Jennifer Runge

Jennifer Runge, MM, is Director of Sacred Music for Parish of the Holy Eucharist (Diocese of Portland) which includes four churches on the beautiful, coast of Maine (Falmouth, Freeport, Gray and Yarmouth), just 10 miles north of Portland.  Jen grew up singing in her dad’s church choir in northeastern Massachusetts and had her first experience with Lessons & Carols at Phillips Exeter where she attended high school.   After a 12-year career in private school choral music education (and 5-year maternity pause!) she made the switch to full-time liturgical music ministry in 2013.  She is also the only certified Making Music, Praying Twice instructor - an early-childhood Catholic-based music and movement curriculum - in Maine.

She lives in a 318-yr old colonial home in Yarmouth with her husband, 3 daughters, dog, and 2 guinea pigs.

#226: “A Leavened Community”: Ensembleship, Listening and Musicality in Choirs (with Steven C. Warner) (REPLAY)

This episode of Ministry Monday is brought to you by DANA. Irish Catholic recording artist, DANA, has ignited the flame of faith in hearts around the world with beautiful songs like "We Are One Body," sung at World Youth Day in 1993; "St. Joseph's Song," in honor Our Lord's earthly father; and her new hit, "Light the Fire," in celebration of St. Patrick. You can now share these hymns with your congregation by downloading the sheet music at DSMusicStore.com today. Visit DSMusicStore.com and enter code NPM23 for 10% off your order of $30 or more.

Choir season is quickly approaching. We know that you’re planning which choir anthems to use, the rehearsal schedule and the plans for each rehearsal, but in this episode, we encourage you to pause and think about the needs of a choir a little bit differently this fall.

Today’s guest is Steven C. Warner. Steven Warner is the founder of the Notre Dame Folk Choir and, until recently, worked for the Notre Dame Newman Center for Faith and Reason in Dublin, Ireland. One of Steve’s many gifts lies in his ability to foster true inclusion and listening in his ensembles. Today we focus on the special qualities that elevate ensembleship within a choir, most of which are not actually music.

#225: A Lifetime of Ministry (with Beth Shaver and Daniel Ladner)

This episode of Ministry Monday is sponsored by Simply Liturgical Music. Responsorial Psalms are meant to be sung, yet daily Mass resources are scarce. That’s why Simply Liturgical Music has worked hard to create a comprehensive catalog of daily and ritual psalms for your worshiping community, including the full 2-Year cycle of weekday psalms. You can try your first psalm for free!

I’m happy to be back after a brief summer hiatus from Ministry Monday. It was great to meet many of you at the convention, both in person and virtually!

And now we’re back. Today on Ministry Monday we speak to Daniel Ladner and Beth Shaver, two pastoral musicians, NPM members, and father and daughter. While both have served in music ministry for decades, Daniel himself has served in music ministry for 72 years- at the same church! Today we get the chance to hear both Beth and Dan’s stories in music ministry, and the impact NPM has had in their lives.
