#126: Black Lives Matter in the Church

Today I’m honored to share one of the recorded sessions from the 2020 Virtual Convention. The following session was one of four sessions in NPM’s “Black Lives Matter” series during the convention, led by an incredible team across the span of the week. Two of these sessions, along with other topics celebrating the Black Catholic community, can be found in the “Series and Themes” area on our website. We are proud to celebrate Black Catholic Voices and will continue to share what we can, listen and learn so all can truly be at the table together.

Dr. Kathleen Dorsey Bellow, Director for the Institute for Black Catholic Studies at Xavier University;

Ms. Valerie Lee-Jeter, Music Director St. Vincent de Paul Church, Philadelphia with an MA in Liturgical Studies, member of NPM Board of Directors;

And Mr. M. Roger Holland II, Composer and Teaching Assistant Professor in Music and Religion and Director of The Spirituals Project at the Lamont School of Music, University of Denver.

 The first voice you will hear today is Lynne’ Gray, followed by Dr. Kathleen Dorsey Bellow. Dr. Kathleen provided a thorough, incredibly valuable resource that is discussed at the end of this episode. You can find this resource list, as well as additional information, by checking out the “show notes” of this episode at Ministrymonday.org.

SHOW NOTES

In this recording, our presenters reference Sister Thea Bowman’s address to the US Conference of Catholic Bishops. I’m proud to announce that, in honor of Black Catholic History Month in November, we will be replaying that address to the USCCB. So stay tuned in November for that episode!

The resource list from Dr. Kathleen Dorsey Bellow can be found by clicking here. Thanks again to Dr. Kathleen for assembling and providing it.
